O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. The judges were impressed with her singing and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by judges. However, O'Neil suffered a significant drop in her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, lowest 3 and the bottom 2. The judges were shocked at this, and advised the audience to choose contestants similar to Melissa O'Neil, who had the best singing abilities. With consistently excellent performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the contest. Werner reportedly forecast that morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a phone call shortly after her win from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
